چکیده

Spectra (3700-10000 Å) and continuum + line images of NGC4945 at optical (V,R,Z,[O III],H +[N II]) and IR (J,H,K,L,H2,Br ) wavelengths reveal a conical wind–blown cavity. The Br and L band images trace a starburst disc or ring with no morphological similarity to the more extended H2 emission which shows the cavity and indicates that it is confined by molecular material heated by shocks or X-rays. The spectra reveal significant bulk motions (< 600 km/s); line ratios typical of LINERS and the discovery of prominent [C I] which is very weak in Seyferts 1–2 while strong in supernova remnants, including the X–ray excited filaments of the Crab. Shock excitation at the surface of the cavity provides a likely explanation for the line emission although photoionization by X-rays associated with the superwind or the suspected Seyfert nucleus detected in hard X–rays cannot be excluded.

The Cone - like H Α Nebula in Ngc 4945 : a Galactic Superwind Bow Shock ?

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We find that a non-axisymmetric bow shock model, with an appropriate choice of parameters, could fit the line splitting velocity field of the cone-like Hα nebula in NGC 4945 better than a canonical cone model. Meanwhile, the bow shock model could also reproduce the morphology of the Hα nebula. The bow shock results from the interaction of the galactic superwin...

High-resolution X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of the core of NGC 4945 with XMM-Newton and Chandra

We utilize the complimentary capabilities of XMM-Newton and Chandra , to conduct a detailed imaging and spectral study of the nearby galaxy NGC 4945 focussing on its nucleus and immediate surroundings (within ∼ 1 kpc of the nucleus). A complex morphology is revealed including a predominantly hard, but partially resolved, nuclear source plus a spectrally soft, conically shaped X-ray “plume”, whi...

A broad - band X - ray view of NGC 4945

We present the results of a BeppoSAX observation of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 4945 in the 0.1–200 keV energy band. The nuclear X-ray emission emerges above '7 keV, through an absorber with column density NH ∼ a few 1024 cm−2. Its remarkable variability (doubling/halving timescale ∼104 s) is not associated with any appreciable spectral changes, ruling out variations of the interposed absorber...

Nuclear and global X-ray properties of LINER galaxies: Chandra and BeppoSAX results for Sombrero and NGC 4736

We report on the 0.1–100 keV BeppoSAX observations of two nearby LINER galaxies, Sombrero and NGC 4736. Chandra ACIS-S observations supplement this broad-beam spectral study with a high resolution look into the nuclear region, and show a dominating central point source in Sombrero and a complex X-ray binary dominated/starburst region in NGC 4736. A compact non-thermal radio source, present in t...

Star-formation in the central kpc of the starburst/LINER galaxy NGC 1614

Aims. The aim is to investigate the star-formation and LINER (low ionization nuclear emission line region) activity within the central kiloparsec of the galaxy NGC 1614. In this paper the radio continuum morphology, which provides a tracer of both nuclear and star-formation activity, and the distribution and dynamics of the cold molecular and atomic gas feeding this activity, are studied. In pa...
